Experimental artist Julianna Barwick release her third album, Nepenthe, on August 20th via Dead Oceans. The follow-up to 2011′s The Magic Place and last year’s OMBRE project with Helado Negro was recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland and produced by musician Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi). According to a press release, the word nepenthe – a magic drug of forgetfulness used to wipe out grief, referenced often in ancient Greek literature – struck a deep chord with Barwick, who had experienced a death in the family during the recording process and felt especially isolated. The LP itself is said to be “about moving forward, finding a way through difficult times — of retaining a feeling of hope.” The biggest influence for Nepenthe, however, came from Barwick’s unfamiliar surroundings and the “stunningly alien landscapes with their lingering magic.” She spoke at length about her time in Iceland: “I had never had anyone play on any record before, so this was a 180 turn. I also was inspired just by being there, and the gorgeousness of that place. Your eyes can’t believe what they’re seeing. I walked home one night and got totally lost in Reykjavík. I ended up walking alongside the ocean – and it was glowing blue. It looked like it had a lamp underneath it. This is a completely different experience than recording myself in my Brooklyn bedroom.” Somers also invited local musicians to contribute to the album, including string ensemble Amiina and múm’s guitarist Róbert Sturla Reynisson.
